Why does LED Lighting Facts have a Verification Testing program?

LED Lighting Facts is committed to providing verified product performance data. To that end, the goal of sampling products for Verification Testing is to ensure that the program is working properly with the new product submission policies that allow related products to be grouped as a family and to encourage accurate reporting of product performance. Products are purchased directly from distributors and retailers to ensure the results reflect how the products perform in the market.

How does Verification Testing benefit me?

Verification Testing benefits all partners. It provides retailers, utilities, program sponsors, and designers with more information on the products listed with LED Lighting Facts, giving them more facts to consider during the purchasing process. Manufacturers benefit because it allows them to distinguish themselves as being truthful about their claims and give their products greater visibility via the LED Lighting Facts website.

How much will Verification Testing cost?

LED Lighting Facts has arranged for independent testing labs and procurement companies to conduct the independent Verification Testing on behalf of the program. The costs associated with Verification Testing will be determined by the testing laboratories and the procurement companies. LED Lighting Facts will not fund any of the costs associated with Verification Testing and will not be involved in any financial transactions; the program will rely on manufacturers to pay for procurement and testing of any products that are selected for testing.

What if a manufacturer chooses not to pay?

Manufacturers are responsible for all of the costs associated with Verification Testing, as it is a condition of participation with LED Lighting Facts. This includes the cost of product procurement and Verification Testing.

Compliance with the complete LED Lighting Facts Verification Testing Policy is required for manufacturers to maintain an active partnership status. Failure to comply will result in the removal of all listed products from the LED Lighting Facts database, rendering the manufacturer's partnership with LED Lighting Facts inactive. The LED Lighting Facts program is voluntary and open to all manufacturer partners, so a manufacturer will be able to reactivate the partnership and list new products. However, those products will also be subject to the program's Verification Testing Policies.  

Will tolerances be applied during Verification Testing?

Yes, tolerances are necessary because of inherent variations in manufactured products and testing errors. LED Lighting Facts has established tolerances based on guidance contained in NEMA LSD 63-2012 (Measurement Methods and Performance Variation for Verifying Testing of General Purpose Lamps and Systems). Manufacturers should be advised that Verification Testing uses a different set of tolerances than those used for initial testing. For more information, please see the Approved Performance Tolerances for Initial Submissions

Will LED Lighting Facts publish the Verification Testing results?

Yes. The purpose of Verification Testing is to maintain the high level of transparency and confidence that partners have in the accuracy of the LED Lighting Facts data. To this end, LED Lighting Facts will make the verification test results searchable by product and manufacturer. The product summary at www.lightingfacts.com/products will indicate if a product has been Verification Tested. The product summary will report and compare all Verification Testing results against all listed metrics. Additionally, the product list search function will include the option to search for products that have been tested by LED Lighting Facts. The Archive List also has a search function that will allow the user to search for products that have been Verification Tested and were archived (either because of failed results or because the product passed but is no longer in the market). 

What happens if a product fails Verification Testing?

Verification Testing will only use LM-79 Integrating Sphere Testing to compare listed versus tested values. If the Verification Testing results fall outside the tolerances, the product will fail Verification Testing. The manufacturer will be informed and have two weeks to correct the reported performance of a failed product by accepting the Verification Testing results and updating the product listing accordingly. If a manufacturer does not update the listed product metrics according to the Verification Testing results, the program reserves the right to archive the product.
